How to choose a fragrance | Webster & Carr guide

Walk into the wrong fragrance hall and it is easy to switch off within five minutes. Too many bottles. Too much noise. Too many people trying to tell you what your signature scent should be.

A better way to buy fragrance starts with a few plain questions. Do you want something clean and easy to wear every day, or something darker for evening? Do you like woods, smoke, citrus, florals, leather, spice, fruit? Do you want a scent that sits close, or one that leaves a proper trail?

At Webster & Carr, we think fragrance gets easier when you stop chasing categories like "best for men" and start paying attention to mood, texture and how you actually dress and move through the week. The right bottle should make sense on your skin and in your life.

Start with mood

Before you look at a single bottle, think about when you'll wear it. Are you shopping for something to reach for on a Monday morning, or a scent for Saturday nights? Fragrance works best when it matches the moment. A fresh, bright scent can feel out of place in the evening, just as a heavy, sensual fragrance might overwhelm you at your desk. Ask yourself what feeling you want to create—energised, calm, confident, mysterious—and let that guide your search.

Test on skin

Paper strips are useful, but they're not your skin. Fragrance changes when it meets your body chemistry, and what smells one way on a tester card will smell different on you. Always spray or apply a small amount to your wrist or inner elbow and give it time to settle. The opening notes—what you smell in the first few minutes—are often bright and sharp. Wait ten minutes for the heart notes to emerge, where the real character of the fragrance lives.

Live with it for a day

If a fragrance feels right in the shop, ask for a sample to take home. Wear it for a full day and notice how it makes you feel. Does it last as long as you need it to? Does it feel like part of you, or does it feel like you're wearing a costume? The best fragrances are the ones you stop noticing on yourself but that others still catch when you move past them. If you're still thinking about it the next morning, that's a good sign.

When to ignore trends

Fragrance trends come and go, but your skin is constant. If everyone is wearing a particular scent and it doesn't suit you, there's no point forcing it. The same goes for price—expensive doesn't always mean better, and a fragrance that costs less can be just as rewarding if it makes you feel good. Buy what works for your life, not what you think you should like.

How to ask for help

If you're still uncertain, ask. A good fragrance advisor will listen to what you actually want, not push you towards what they think you should buy. Tell them about the scents you already love, the clothes you wear most, and the feeling you're after. The more specific you are, the better they can help you find something that fits.
