What makes a good barbershop? | Webster & Carr Newcastle
People often judge a barbershop by the finish. That is fair, but the result usually starts earlier.
A good consultation tells you whether the person holding the scissors is actually listening. It covers head shape, hair behaviour, texture, routine, what you hate about your current cut, and how much effort you want to put in each morning. Without that, even a technically decent cut can feel wrong by the time you get home.
At Webster & Carr, consultation is part of the service, not dead time before the service starts. It is how you avoid a cut that looks good for ten minutes and awkward for three weeks.
What to bring to your appointment
Come with reference images if you have them. A photo of a cut you like, or even just a description, gives us something concrete to work from. Bring your usual styling products too, or ask what we recommend. We can show you how a cut behaves with the right product versus the wrong one—it makes a real difference.
How often should you come back?
Most cuts hold their shape for four to six weeks, depending on how fast your hair grows and how precise you want to stay. Some clients come every four weeks for maintenance. Others stretch it to six or eight and accept a slightly softer shape in between. There is no rule—it depends on your hair, your routine, and what you are comfortable with.
Common mistakes clients make
Waiting too long between cuts is the biggest one. Hair grows unevenly, and by week eight, the shape is usually gone. Another is not mentioning what you actually do with your hair each morning. If you tell us you want low-maintenance but you are not willing to use product or spend time styling, we need to know that upfront. The cut has to match your real life, not your ideal life.
Why product choice matters
The cut is half the story. The right product—whether that is pomade, clay, or nothing at all—determines how your hair sits and how long it lasts through the day. We can recommend what works for your hair type and the style you are after. Using the wrong product, or no product at all, can make even a good cut look flat or shapeless.
