Why it earned its place
The Original is the fragrance that began the Eight & Bob story.
In the summer of 1937, Albert Fouquet, a Parisian aristocrat and perfume connoisseur, met a young John F. Kennedy on the Côte d’Azur. Kennedy was immediately taken by the fragrance Albert was wearing, and Albert later left a sample at his hotel with a handwritten note:
“In this bottle, you will find the dash of French glamour that your American personality lacks.”
Back in the United States, Kennedy wrote to request eight more bottles, and, if possible, one for Bob. The order gave Eight & Bob its name, while Kennedy’s family connections soon introduced the fragrance to figures including Cary Grant and James Stewart.
After Albert’s death in 1939, his butler Philippe preserved the formula through the Second World War, concealing bottles inside hand-cut books to protect them from seizure.
The fragrance itself is a refined woody amber. Cardamom, pink pepper and lemon create a bright, gently spiced opening before violet leaf, labdanum and dry woods bring depth through the heart. Amber, sandalwood and vetiver settle into a warm, elegant base.
Curator’s Note
The Original is the clearest introduction to Eight & Bob. It feels classic, polished and easy to wear, but the spice, violet leaf and vetiver give it enough character to avoid feeling conventional. A strong signature fragrance for work, dinners and everyday wear.
